If carried out at the right age, height increasing exercises can be hugely beneficial for you in terms of optimizing your maximum potential height.

Most people incorrectly believe that such exercises have no impact at all on your height, or more specifically your potential to grow taller, the fact is that these views are far from the truth. If you want to grow taller then understanding the exercises contained within this page is essential reading. Remember before carrying out any exercises, always consult a medical professional if in doubt.

Best age to do these exercises?

It's imperative that you carry out height increasing exercises before your growth plates have fused. The age that this occurs varies massively from person to person, but is usually around the ages of 16-18 for males and 13-14 for females. After your growth plates have fused, there is no benefit to be gained from these exercises.

Why do height increasing exercises work?

Exercise is a crucial envronmental factor of obtaining your maximum potential height. The two main reasons why height increasing exercises work are:

1. Stimulation of growth plates

The exercises described in this article stimulate your growth plates, which in turn increases the rate of growth of new bone. Certain bones such as the femur play a huge role in our height. The main reason for this is because these exercises target the strengthening of ligaments and tendoms which are located next to the growth plates. Targeting these areas increases blood supply to the vital zones that lengthen your bones.

2. Better conditioning of the discs between your vertabrae in your back

The discs within your back are designed to absorb shocks and vibrations travelling through our body, as well as allowing for flexibility of the torso. By increasing the thickness of each disc, we can easily lengthen our spine. Some exercises help to strengthen these discs, keeping them healthy and plump. As we get older, they will get thinner due to years of compression (this is why you get smaller later in life). So it's important tyo carry out the right exercises to not only add to your height but also to maintain your height with age.

Recommended height increasing exercises

Remember, before starting an exercise regime you should consult a physician or a qualified fitness advisor. If done incorrectly, exercises can be dangerous.

1. Hanging - I won't go into this one much because I previously did a full write up on how hanging from a bar can increase your height.

2. Swimming - As I have said before, research has proven that improving general fitness levels, thus increasing your overall health can have a small impact on height increase. General exercise is one of the recognized environmental factors influencing height increase. So why swimming over others? The simple reason is that swimmers do not suffer from the spinal compressions that most other sports do. When in the water, there is little or no compression of your spine. In contrast, running, basketball, football etc all carry significant compressions on the spinal column. Each footstep or jump exerts force on your spinal column, effectively compressiong your discs making them thinner, and less robust for future growth. Swimming also stretches the spinal column, freeing up your spinal discs.

3. Stretching - Not all stretching exercises are beneficial for height. The ones that are need to focus on stretching the muscles of the back and legs. This helps strengthen the muscles, tendons and ligaments reducing compression and stimulating blood flow in the vital growth areas. Don't fall into the trap of believing that any kind of stretchintg will help, it won't. Take a look at the illustrations below; carry out these stretches on a regular basis. These are all the stretches you need to know for maximizing your growth.

Exercises to increase height

If your still young I really recommend carrying out the exercises mentioned in this post on a regular basis. There's no reason why you can't stretch on a daily basis and carry out other exercises 3 or 4 times a week.
